How we measure

Our Everyday walk rating

For each neighborhood we find the closest grocery store, coffee shop, restaurant, park, school, pharmacy, library and bus stop, then work out the real walking route to each on sidewalks, trails and streets at an easy 3 mph. The rating is how many of those 8 everyday places are within a 20-minute walk, about a mile.

Everyday ride is the same 8 places within a 15-minute bike ride at an easy 10 mph, about 2.5 miles, plus the minutes to the nearest trail. Rides stick to trails, bike lanes and streets posted 30 mph or less; they cross busier roads but never ride along them.

Our own numbers

The map data is OpenStreetMap, and the walking and riding routes are worked out by our team. It isn’t Walk Score or Bike Score. We measure from the middle of each neighborhood, so homes at the near or far edge will be a few minutes closer or farther. We don’t rate sidewalk quality or traffic; walk or ride it yourself before you buy.
